It is common to see AKN in patients with curly hair. Usually this type of hair can grow back into the skin and provoke the body’s inflammatory response as it attacks the hair shaft and follicle.  However Acne Keloidalis Nuchae can also affect individuals with straight hair.

This patient had grown out his hair to hide the affected area. Not only did he have the bumps, but the AKN had also caused hair loss as well.

The patient was offered the option of treatment with medication. Creams and steroid injections can help reduce symptoms. But they can’t make the lesions go away completely. So the patient chose surgery.

AKN Bumps on the Back of the Head Before Surgical Cure By Dr Umar –  Importance of Wound Closure

In addition to excising the wound, it is absolutely essential to apply appropriate wound closure methods.  If the edges of the excision are closed right away, the patient experiences a very restricted range of head movement. Dr. U uses serial tension stitching which allows the wound to close gradually. This allows the skin to grow, develop and expand to resume the tension and elasticity that it had before, allowing the patient to move their head naturally.

In the video, Dr. Umar mentions that surgery can certainly get rid of the AKN tissue growths that have already manifested in a certain area.  However, he also cautions that this does not stop the lesions from developing in other regions.  Yet surgery remains as the best treatment for getting rid of existing Acne Keloidalis Nuchae bumps and tumors.

The results of this patient’s surgery can be seen in the before and after pictures of this video. After excising the patient’s bumps, the wound was allowed to close completely on its own natural time table.  The horizontal wound (and resulting linear scar) was positioned along the posterior hairline, making it less noticeable. And the patient no longer had an area of hair loss due to the AKN growths.
