Leg veins become visible as a result of dysfunctional valves within the blood vessels. These valves help the blood move in a single direction back up to the heart after they have delivered oxygen to cells in the body.  But they can become weak due to factors like genetics or ongoing pressure.  This causes blood to flow downwards and collect in the lower part of the body. When this happens, reddish or bluish veins can be seen on the skin’s surface. Leg vein removal procedures can help restore a normal looking appearance.

The Use of Laser For Leg Vein Removal

Some patient cases can be treated through the use of laser. This reduces the chance of scars that can develop since it is less invasive compared to surgery.

Lasers offer a very precise way to actually correct or change unwanted tissue structures. Much of their effectiveness depends on the type of wavelength that is used.

The energy of the wavelength needs to be absorbed by oxygenated hemoglobin in the blood. This needs to happen in order to destroy the walls of the unwanted blood vessels.

The Fine Touch Dermatology patient in these photos underwent leg vein removal with the Gentle YAG (long pulse Nd:YAG) laser which uses the 1064nm wavelength. Dr. Umar typically uses laser energy for veins that are less than 3mm. Diameters larger than 3mm can be addressed effectively with sclerosants.

For this patient, the Gently YAG was successful in removing the unwanted leg veins.  Laser energy works by damaging the walls of the blood vessels so that they can be broken down further by the body. What were once unsightly veins, then becomes waste tissue which is then removed from the surface by natural processes.
