This patient at Fine Touch Dermatology had faint lines on her forehead and in between her brows. These wrinkles are caused by facial muscles. Initially they are seen when the individual is moving their forehead or furrowing their brows. Over time, repeat movements can cause these wrinkles to become ingrained on the skin’s surface. The patient did not want to use a neuromuscular injection like Botox or Dysport. She simply wanted a way to make the lines disappear. Since these creases were quite shallow, Belotero was used to fill them in.
Belotero As A New Type of Hyaluronic Acid Filler
Like Juvederm and Restylane, Belotero is a processed form of hyaluronic acid. This is a carbohydrate polymer that is found in our joints, skin and other parts of the body. However, the hyaluronic acid of packaged dermal fillers is derived from bacteria. Lab processes then create cross linkages among the molecules to create a thicker gel substance instead of a liquid.
Juvederm and Restylane are created as particulate solutions. Since they are clear, light will pass through and scatter due to the presence of particles. This is known as the Tyndall effect and will appear as a blue discoloration.
Also, if the injections are not placed deep enough, the particles may form lumps beneath the surface.
In producing Belotero, the bacterial hyaluronic acid is processed using an advanced new technology. This creates a resulting compound with a unique structure that is different from a particulate gel.
Doctors are able to inject Belotero close to the skin’s surface to fill fine lines. It creates a smooth and continuous layer to reduce the appearance of these wrinkles.
