Belotero is the latest innovation in injectable dermal fillers. It is a hyaluronic acid (HA) formulation to temporarily eradicate facial wrinkles and folds. Belotero works similar to other HA formulations (Restylane and Juvéderm) and also targets fine lines. This dermal filler may be injected closer to the skin surface to address fine lines.

BELOTERO FORMULATIONS

Three formulations of Belotero are available in different HA concentrations. However, the FDA only approved Belotero Balance in 2011. Belotero Soft and Intense are approved in Russia, Italy, United Kingdom, Switzerland, Austria and Germany. Each formulation targets different areas of the face or body.

  • Soft (20mg/ml)
  • Balance (25 mg/ml)
  • Intense (25.5 mg/ml)

Outside the US, Belotero formulations are used on the hands, nose, cheekbones and lips. Botero Balance is advised for lines around the mouth stateside, but a physician may use in other areas.

HOW BELOTERO BALANCE WORKS

HA is naturally found in the body and aides in hydration of the skin. Aging, sun damage and other environmental and lifestyle factors reduce production of HA. Belotero injections therefore replace the lost HA, which adds volume back to face. HA binds with water to plump wrinkles and folds temporarily, usually from six months to a year.

The formulation is a transparent gel injected into areas with wrinkles and folds. Its plumping and voluminous effects smooth the face.  A study by Merz Aesthetics, its distributor, reveals that most patients need two injections to reach maximum skin smoothing benefits. When the efficacy fades, Belotero is naturally eliminated from the body.

NUANCES OF THE FORMULATION

All three HA formulations are cross-linked to create thicker, longer lasting injectables. Belotero slightly differs because its structure involves Cohesive Polydensified Matrix technology. It is a monophasic compound rather than particulate suspension.

It makes it more lightweight and elastic, which allows injections closer to the surface. With the suspensions, they are prone to clumping if injected this way.

As with all injectables, side effects may include swelling at the injection site, mild irritation, bruising, itching and tenderness. Always consult with a board certified physician to determine if Belotero is appropriate.
